CLIMATE/WEATHER
Summer
Summers are typical of the high desert. Maximum daytime temperatures reach into the 100s at times, but low humidity and gentle breezes make the temperatures seem lower. Because of the elevation, nights are usually cool with minimums near 75 degrees.
Spring and Fall
Spring the last couple of years has marked the start of our warmer daytime temperatures: 60s in March, reaching to the 90s by May. Fall shows signs of cooler temperatures
by late September (90s), dropping to the 60s by November.
Winter
Nights get cold with temporatures
dropping to freezing for short
periods, but days usually warm
to the mid 50s. Skies are clear
and the sunshine is warm
even in winter.
COUNTY
Pahrump is in Nye County which encompasses 18,064 square miles,
the largest county in Nevada and the third largest in the nation. Nye
County's seat is located in Tonopah, NV (Elevation 6,030 feet; 165
miles north of Pahrump on U.S. Hwy. 95). However, Nye County

HOW PAHRUMP GOT ITS NAME
The Southern Paiutes, who occupied the Pahrump Valley centuries ago, named our Valley "Pah" meaning water, and "Rimpi" meaning stone or rock. Pah Rimpi became Pahrump, the Paiute description for springs or flowing waters emerging from rock.
LOCATION & SIZE OF PAHRUMP VALLEY
Pahrump is located in the southwest corner of Nye County, 63 miles northwest of Las Vegas and 8 miles from the Calilornia border. The Valley is 26 miles long and 8 to 12 miles wide (approximately 364 square miles)!
POPULATION & GROWTH
As of December 1999, Pahrump's population was estimated as 33,723 people. The annual growth rate of 15-20% has remained constant the last nineyears. Pahrump is the fastest growing unincorporated rural town in America.
TERRAIN
Pahrump is situated in a valley surrounded by the Spring Mountain Range to the east and the Nopah Mountains to the west. The mountains act as effective barriers to moisture-laden storms moving eastward from the Pacific Ocean. Thus, Pahrump sees very few overcast or rainy days. In fact, the area is second only to Yuma, Arizona in the number of sunny days in the U.S. with 216 per year. Pahrump is in the nation's driest region, enjoying the lowest average relative humidity in the country. Although Pahrump does not receive much rainfall, there is plenty of water underground. Pahrump is sitting on the 3rd largest aquifer in the United States.
